Book formatting turns a manuscript into readable pages. The goal is not simply to reach a page count, but to make the text comfortable to read and the print file consistent with the chosen edition. Bookvaib's Interior Formatter helps with layout preparation. Use the exported pages, not only the editing view, to judge the result.
1. Set the edition and trim size first
Decide whether you are preparing a print interior or an ebook. A print PDF has fixed pages; an ebook can reflow on different devices. Do not expect a print layout with fixed page numbers and large decorative spaces to behave identically in an ebook.
For print, choose a trim size that suits the text and illustrations. Set the margins with the final binding in mind: the inner gutter needs room for the spine. KDP's required inside margin depends on page count, so return to those settings if a revision makes the book substantially longer.
2. Check the manuscript structure before styling
Make chapter titles and paragraph breaks clear in the source text. Preserve intentional new paragraphs instead of flattening the whole manuscript into one block. Check that the book starts where you expect and that chapter markers have not become ordinary body text.
In the formatter, review the title page, front matter and chapter openings. If you include a contents page, verify that its entries correspond to the actual sections. Missing chapters and duplicated headings are editorial problems; a different font does not fix them.
3. Test the most demanding pages
Use a dense page, a chapter opening and a page with an illustration as test cases. Check body font size, line spacing and paragraph treatment at the intended physical page size. A layout that looks spacious on a short sample may become crowded when used with longer paragraphs.
Inspect isolated lines at page breaks, large accidental gaps and text placed too close to the gutter. Avoid shrinking all text merely to force a target page count. Where illustrations reach the page edge, choose the appropriate bleed setup and compare the file dimensions with KDP's current instructions.
4. Review the exported interior before the cover
Export the interior and inspect the actual file from the beginning, middle and end. Check that the page size is consistent, that accented characters display correctly and that illustrations have not become stretched or clipped. Review page numbering and any intentionally blank pages.
Use the final exported page count in the Cover Designer. Then upload the interior in KDP and review its previewer warnings. A successful export is not a print approval. If you can order a proof, check readability and gutter space on paper before making the edition available to readers.
Quick checklist
- Print and ebook requirements are treated separately.
- Trim size matches the intended edition.
- Gutter and outside margins have been checked.
- Paragraphs and chapter headings remain intact.
- Dense pages and illustration pages are readable.
- Exported page count is used for the print cover.
Common questions
Can I predict the final page count from the word count?
Only approximately. Trim size, font, spacing, chapter starts and illustrations change pagination. Use the exported interior's actual page count when calculating the spine.
Does exporting a PDF mean the book is ready for KDP?
No. Inspect the exported pages and confirm the current KDP requirements. Review the file in KDP's previewer and consider a physical proof.
